Friend of mine got into playing guitar last year. Bought a cheap Squier, was learning basic chords, having a good time. Went to a local open mic night just to watch, some dude in a leather vest spent ten minutes grilling him about what gauge strings he used and if he knew the "right" way to hold a pick. My buddy was super turned off, almost quit playing altogether.

Man, that's infuriating. Some people just don't get that playing music is supposed to be fun. That kind of elitism is what scares off new folks for no good reason.
