Tried to explain the X-Men timeline to my mom and it went about as well as you'd think

My mom saw my X-Men comics and asked who the guy with the claws was. I figured, how hard could it be? I started with the original five, jumped to Giant-Size, mentioned the Dark Phoenix Saga, and then had to explain how the movies are different. After about 15 minutes, she just stared at me and said, 'So he's a cat man who heals?' I realized I'd somehow turned 60 years of comics into 'cat man'. I learned that trying to give the full picture just makes people's eyes glaze over. Now I just say 'superhero soap opera' and change the subject. Anyone have a better one-sentence pitch for explaining this mess to normal people?

How about just calling it a really long family drama with superpowers?

That's selling it short, jamie940, the superpowers are the whole point.

Fifteen minutes and she landed on cat man, that's honestly kind of perfect. Milam48 is right that the powers matter, but the family drama is what makes you care about the guy with the claws. Maybe the best pitch is just "a messed up family that sometimes saves the world.
