Vent: my cousin tried to tell me his favorite hero is better than mine at a family dinner
Last week at my aunt's house in Phoenix, my cousin Mark started going on about how Iron Man is the 'smartest and best' hero ever. I said I've always liked Spider-Man more because he feels more real with his everyday problems. Mark just kept saying stuff like 'Tony Stark built his suit in a cave, what has Peter Parker done?' It turned into this whole thing where we were just listing comic facts back and forth for like twenty minutes. My other cousin had to tell us to drop it so we could eat. Has anyone else had a family member get way too into a comic debate like that?

My uncle once pulled out a whiteboard to prove Han shot first. Thanksgiving gravy got cold while he drew diagrams. I was just trying to get some mashed potatoes. Family debates over dumb stuff are the best and worst part of holidays lol.

The whiteboard part got me, @janah83. My cousin once brought a printed timeline to argue about the timeline in a cartoon we watched as kids. The real issue is that these debates are never about the actual topic, they're about who gets to hold the floor while the food gets cold. It's a power move disguised as nerd talk. I feel for you just trying to get those potatoes, that's the real tragedy.

My buddy's dad used a laser pointer on a pie chart to explain a football call last year. @the_harper is right, it's totally a power move to control the room. The turkey just sat there getting sad while he lectured us.
