Almost lost a finger during a night dive off Port Arthur last month

I was doing a pipeline inspection in zero vis and my knife slipped right out of my sheath while I was trying to cut some stray line. The current grabbed it and it bounced off my hand before sinking into the mud. Now I only use a locking sheath and I keep a backup ziptied to my harness. Has anyone else had gear just fail on them at the worst possible time? What did you switch to after?

Honestly that sounds like a freak accident. I just keep my gear clean and check it before a dive, never felt the need to double up on everything.

Man I always rolled my eyes at backup gear but that story just changed my whole mind.

Lost my only headlamp 2 miles from the car at dusk. Never again.
