Almost lost a finger on a job in Port Arthur last winter because my gloves were too loose

I was working on a pipeline repair in the ship channel, temp was like 28 degrees and I grabbed a thicker pair of work gloves from the truck. They were a size too big. Got my hand caught between a cable and a sheave for like 2 seconds and it twisted the glove off but scraped my knuckle down to bone. Now I only buy gloves that fit tight and have grip dots. What do you guys use in cold water that still keeps you safe?

Might be cheaper to just buy warm liners that fit right under your regular gloves.

Wait, isn't the problem usually that regular gloves aren't thick enough on their own? I feel like liners just add a thin layer under whatever you already have, but if your main gloves are already too thin, that won't fix the real issue.

@the_diana has a point about price but only if you pick the right liners. I've had decent luck with silk liners under my standard ski gloves, they trap heat without adding bulk. The key is getting liners that actually fit snug at the wrist and don't bunch up, otherwise you're just layering cold air pockets. Cheap cotton ones from the drugstore won't cut it either, you need something with merino wool or a thermal knit.
