Am I the only one who found that a 5-gallon bucket with a hole cut in the bottom works better than a proper bell for shallow water inspections?
After three failed attempts with a standard inspection bell on a silt-heavy river job near Memphis, I jury-rigged the bucket system and it gave me a perfectly clear view for the whole 20-foot dive, so has anyone else tried something similarly unorthodox that actually worked?

Sounds like you just got lucky with the silt that day.

Ever get the feeling the official tool was designed by someone who never got their hands dirty? That bucket trick is pure field genius, it just works with the mess instead of fighting it. Good on you for not just throwing more money at the "right" gear.

Happens all the time with the "right" tool being too fancy for the job. I see it with people using a butter knife instead of a flathead screwdriver, or a credit card to jimmy a lock. Sometimes the simple, dumb shape of a bucket just moves the water differently, and that's what you needed. The proper bell probably creates a weird current that stirs up the silt. Your fix wasn't luck, it was just better physics for that spot.
