Appreciation post: The old sat phone that saved my butt near Port Fourchon

Last month I was doing a inspection on a platform about 12 miles out from Port Fourchon. My comms unit started acting up and I could barely hear the surface team. I was about to call it a day when I remembered the old Iridium sat phone in my dry bag, the one I almost left behind because it's heavy and I never use it. I got it out and it worked perfectly, we finished the job in 2 hours instead of wasting a trip. That thing is like 8 years old and still holds a charge. I'm never leaving it ashore again, no matter how much my back complains. Any of you guys have a backup piece of gear that feels like a pain but always comes through?

Old reliable beats new shiny every time.

I get the sentiment, but I'd push back a little. That old gear can crap out when you least expect it, and a newer backup might be lighter and just as reliable.

Three ounces lighter isn't worth worrying about a dead battery on the trail.
