Hit 1,000 hours underwater last week and didn't even realize it until my logbook told me
I was flipping through my logbook to check a valve repair depth from a job back in March and noticed the numbers adding up. Ran a quick total and boom, 1,003 hours logged. I honestly thought I was maybe around 700 or so. Most of those hours are in the Gulf near Galveston doing platform inspections and hull cleaning. I remember my first dive down there I was so nervous I forgot to open my equalization valve and my ears felt like they were gonna pop out. Now 1,000 hours later I can basically do a bottom inspection with my eyes closed. It hit me kind of funny because there was no big ceremony or anything, just a number on a page that I never aimed for. Anyone else find a milestone like this sneaks up on you when you least expect it?

That math does put it in perspective, 41 days straight is a wild way to think about it. Your barnacles note made me laugh, my own logbook has "fouling so thick could be its own ecosystem" scrawled next to a November entry. It is strange how these quiet numbers add up without any fanfare, just a personal marker you cross without planning to.

Get a real kick out of milestones like that sneaking up on you. One day you're just doing your job and the next you realize you've spent over a month of your life underwater. Bet your logbook is a mess of scribbled depths and barnacle notes by now.

Actually, it's not quite a month of your life underwater. 1,000 hours works out to about 41 and a half days straight, not 30. But yeah, you're right that it sneaks up on you. That's the weird part. I've got a couple hundred hours in the water myself doing hull inspections for a marine salvage company down in Florida, and I never counted until a client asked for my total logged time. My logbook is definitely a mess too, half the pages have salt stains and I've got random notes like "barnacles thick as pancakes" scribbled in the margins. There's no ceremony for these things, just a quiet moment where you realize you've done something that used to terrify you without even thinking about it. Kind of makes you wonder what number you'd hit if you had a logbook for the rest of your life too.
