Kirby Morgan vs. Ocean Reef: my drysuit hood choice

Had to pick between a Kirby Morgan 37 and an Ocean Reef Neptune for a job off the coast of Galveston last month. Went with the Kirby because it's what my mentor always used. Communication was crystal clear, but the weight took some getting used to. Anyone else stick with older gear even when the newer stuff looks tempting?

Swapped mine out for a lighter model last year but ended up going right back to the old Kirby. That familiar weight and feel just makes everything easier when you're already dealing with a hundred other things underwater.

@kim.jake, swapping back after trying lighter gear is pretty common once you've spent real time with a Kirby.

Man I used to be the complete opposite. I thought lighter gear was always better and couldn't understand why guys stuck with the old heavy stuff. But after a couple rough dives where my mask kept fogging up and the comms were spotty I finally borrowed a buddy's old Kirby. Changed my mind pretty quick. The weight is a trade off for sure but knowing everything is going to work right every single time is worth it. I still keep my lighter mask as a backup but I grab the old one first every time now.
