Lost my favorite dive knife at the Port of Galveston job last Thursday

I was doing a routine inspection on a mooring chain around 30 feet down when a current surge yanked my knife right out of its sheath. Spent 20 minutes feeling around the murky bottom before my air got too low. Has anyone found a good way to keep gear secure in high current conditions?

Well, isn't that more of a slip tip than a dive knife?

Depends on the dive knife honestly. Some slip tips are basically dive knives with a different point, and some dive knives are so thin they might as well be slip tips. But yeah, that one in the photo looks way more like a spearfishing slip tip than a real dive knife. Too much flex in the blade for prying or cutting lines underwater. Belongs on a spear shaft, not on your leg. Why carry a tool for the wrong job?

Skyler_jackson27 makes a good point there. It's funny how we all grab whatever gear is handy without really thinking if it's built for the job. I've noticed that same pattern in a lot of things, not just diving gear. People buy something because it looks tough or has a cool brand name, but the actual design is all wrong for what they're doing with it. It's like buying a fancy screwdriver set when you really just need a hammer. Sometimes the simplest tool for the task is the one that won't get yanked away by a current.
