My go-to method for staying calm when visibility drops to zero

Focusing on my breathing and the sound of my regulator keeps me grounded until the silt settles.

Tbh I always reach out and touch something solid, like a rock or the anchor line. That physical anchor does more for my brain than just listening ever could. It gives my hands a job and stops the mental spin.

It's not just about keeping your hands busy. That touch sends a primal safety signal straight to your nervous system. Your brain reads solid contact as proof the world is stable, which shuts down the panic loop.

Pressing my hands against a tree trunk works for me. The rough bark gives my skin something real to feel, and the solidness stops my thoughts from racing. I focus on the texture until my breathing slows down. It's a quick fix that doesn't need any tools.

Hold up, is touching a rock really sending "primal safety signals"? Sounds like we're overcomplicating grabbing onto something so you don't freak out. It's just a distraction for your hands, not some deep brain hack.
