Nearly lost a $600 camera housing in 40 feet of murky water

I was doing an inspection on a pier piling in Galveston back in June. The vis was maybe 2 feet and I bumped the housing against a barnacle covered beam. The latch popped open and my camera started floating up. I grabbed it by the cord just in time but water got inside and the camera was toast. Anyone else ever had a housing fail on them like that?

Barnacles are basically nature's little knives. That latch probably didn't stand a chance against a good whack from a cluster of them. Murky water makes everything worse too since you can't see the hit coming. At least you grabbed the cord, that's a solid reflex.

Did you find out what actually caused the latch to fail, or was it just the barnacle hit? @wesley_jones that sounds rough too, but at least a GoPro is cheaper to replace than a housing like that.

Lost a GoPro that way off a jetty in Oregon, felt dumb for weeks.
