That one dive supervisor in Galveston who fixed my attitude

First week on a pipeline job, I was grumbling about rechecking every valve before we splashed. This older supervisor pulled me aside and said, "You're not paid to be bored, you're paid to notice." He walked me through a valve that had a hairline crack you only catch if you look at the light angle. Stuck with me ever since. Anyone else have a mentor moment like that on deck?

Picked up the same lesson grinding on a research vessel out of San Diego. This old salt told me to stop rushing the pre-dive checks and start asking what each valve would do if it failed. Once I started picturing the worst case, I noticed stuff I'd walked past for weeks. Now I take my time and look at everything twice, once for function and once for failure.
