TIL about the bend radius rule for umbilical lines the hard way

Was swapping out a thruster on a job last week and my umbilical got pinched behind a grate. Didn't think much of it until I lost comms mid-dive. Turns out I bent it past the 6 inch minimum radius and crushed the inner copper wire. My supervisor showed me the cutaway and I couldn't believe how thin those conductors are. Anyone else had a dumb umbilical mistake that taught you a lesson?

Right? The whole "six inches of copper wire" thing got me. I actually read a blog post a few weeks ago from some electrician who was talking about how people always think more wire = better ground, but really it's about having a clean, solid connection that matters more than the length. He said he's seen setups with way too much wire coiled up that actually created a little magnetic field and messed with readings. Made me think back to when I tried to fix a lamp as a teenager and just wrapped extra wire around the screw because I thought it looked more secure. Spoiler alert: it didn't work and I almost fried myself. That post really drove home how following the exact specs is smarter than trying to be fancy with extra material.
