20 years in IT and I just figured out I was thermal pasting wrong
Was watching a repair video on a Lenovo T480 last night and the guy dabbed a pea size dot instead of my usual spread with a card. Went back and checked temps on the last 3 laptops I did with my method and they were running 6-8C hotter. Anyone else learn a basic skill backwards for way too long?

Right there with you. Just found out I've been doing the credit card spread method wrong for years too.

Spread it thin like butter on toast" might be a bit dramatic. Unless you're using liquid metal or something, a slightly uneven paste layer isn't going to melt your CPU. It's thermal paste, not rocket surgery.

Wait, you mean I'm NOT supposed to spread it thin like butter on toast? I've been doing that for a decade on every build. My gaming PC is probably crying right now.
