Client site visit near Atlanta showed me a weird power strip trick
Honestly, I was at a client's office last Tuesday fixing their server rack and noticed they had all their UPS units plugged into a cheap power strip. Turns out the strip was daisy chaining voltage drops and causing random shutdowns. I swapped it for a surge protector rated for 15 amps and the issue went away. Has anyone else seen a client do something like that with their gear?

You asked if it voids the warranty" is right, but honestly the bigger issue is that cheap power strips aren't rated to handle the surge current a UPS can pull when it kicks on. That kind of load can melt the strip's internal wiring over time, especially if it's one of those dollar store specials. I've pulled apart burnt strips that looked fine on the outside but had charred internals from that exact setup.

Wait, they plugged UPS units into a cheap power strip? That's a fire waiting to happen, man. UPS units already have built in surge protection and battery backup, daisy chaining them like that just asks for trouble. I've seen people do some dumb stuff with power strips but that's a new level of sketchy. Glad you caught it before something actually caught fire.
