Coworker swore by thermal paste spread pattern, I mocked him for a year

He said use the X method on the CPU, I told him that's placebo junk. Did a 6 month benchmark at our shop in Austin, his temps ran 8 degrees cooler every single load test. Anyone else eat crow on a technique they dismissed?

Man, that X method bit me too. Spent a whole weekend redoing my buddy's rig after telling him he was wasting paste, only to find my own temps dropped 5 degrees. Guess the universe has a sick sense of humor when it comes to thermal goo and dumb opinions.

Whoa, that's wild, tbh. I had the same thing happen but with the line method, I swore up and down it was all marketing junk. Then I actually timed my builds and kept a log, and the line method was way more consistent for me, not even a huge temp drop, but just even spread every time. Honestly, I think the best thing is whatever makes you slow down and not rush the paste job, that's the real secret. Now I just tell people to pick a pattern and own it, as long as it's not a giant blob in the middle.
