Found out I was thermal pasting CPUs wrong for 5 years

Had a client in Austin bring back a PC that kept overheating after my last repair. Took it apart and realized I was using way too much paste, more like frosting a cake than a thin layer. Have any other techs had that moment where you found out a basic skill you thought you had down was actually wrong, and what tipped you off?
