Had a chat with a retired sysadmin that wrecked my outlook on remote work
I was bitching about a client's janky VPN setup at a local shop in Denver, and this old-timer next to me said 'you kids think the cloud is magic, but it's just someone else's computer with worse security.' He showed me a photo of his server room from 1999 with a literal padlock on the rack, and now I can't stop thinking about how much trust we dump on third parties. Anyone else feel like we traded physical security for convenience and got the short end?

Sounds like that old server room had better security than half the cloud services I use.

Right, @milarodriguez, that "better security than half the cloud services" part really hits home. I've noticed this pattern everywhere, like how my phone's "cloud backup" doesn't seem to work half the time, but I still have a shoebox of old printed photos that never got hacked. Same with my car keys - the digital fob for my newer car is glitchy, but the old metal key to my garage never fails me when the power's out. It's like the older stuff was built to last, while the new stuff is built to be replaced.
