Had a client in Phoenix who insisted on using a hairdryer to fix his overheating laptop.
He said it worked 'once before' for a dusty fan. I brought my iFixit kit and showed him how to properly clean the heatsink with compressed air and replace the thermal paste. The difference was 20 degrees Celsius under load, and the machine stopped shutting down. Ever had a client try something that wild before you got there?

That's a classic move right there. People get desperate when their gear fails and try anything. Good on you for showing them the right fix.

Buddy of mine tried patching a radiator hose with electrical tape last winter. Ended up stranded on the highway when that tape melted and steam went everywhere. Cost him a tow and a new hose plus the labor. @kimr74 nailed it, helping someone fix it right the first time beats watching them learn the hard way.

I saw a guy try to fix a broken fuel line with duct tape and zip ties last summer. That "wild guess" cost him his whole engine block.

You know what I read about that kind of panic fix? It usually makes the whole problem worse and costs more later. @kimr74 is right, it's a total classic move. People skip the basics and go for a wild guess instead of just stopping to figure out the real issue. They end up breaking something that wasn't even broken before. That's why showing the right fix matters, it saves a ton of headache down the road.
