Had to pick between a full reimage or a deep malware hunt on a client's infected server. Went with the hunt and saved their custom configs.

Ever notice how this is just like trying to fix a really old car instead of buying a new one? You keep chasing one weird noise after another, putting in all this time and money. In the end, you're stuck with the same broken down car and a huge repair bill. The smart money usually knows when to cut its losses.

That "deep malware hunt" choice is a real gamble. A buddy of mine tried that for a client who had a ton of weird, old software running their warehouse. Spent two full days tracing everything, thought he had it clean. A week later, the same junk processes were back and had spread to the backup server. He ended up doing the reimage anyway and lost all that time. Sometimes the hunt feels right, but man, it can really backfire.

Wow, my friend tried that hunt and missed a sneaky keylogger.
