Last Tuesday a guy brought his PC into my garage in Vancouver saying it kept shutting off during games, and when I pulled the side panel the CPU fan was basically a felt blanket of dog hair. I vacuumed it out, repasted the chip, and it ran 20 degrees cooler on the same games, all for $60 and 40 minutes of my time. How do you all bring this up to customers who think a can of air once every couple years counts as upkeep?
I used to just hand people their PC back and say nothing, figured it wasn't my business if they didn't want to hear it. Then a regular brought his rig in for the third time in 8 months and I finally told him straight up that his smoking habit was coating the inside of his case in tar. He switched to vaping after that and his temps dropped on their own. The way I see it now, staying quiet is doing them a favor they didn't ask for. If someone pays me to fix a heat problem, I owe them the real reason it happened. Just say it plain, no lecture, and most folks take it fine.
