Server room at a dental office in Topeka changed my mind about zip ties
Everybody always says zip ties are the way to go for cable management but I spent 45 minutes cutting them out of a mess left by the last guy last Tuesday. Velcro straps are slower upfront but way easier to redo when you have to trace a bad line. Anyone else prefer velcro over zip ties for networking jobs?

Totally agree - same lazy shortcuts people use everywhere instead of doing it RIGHT the first time, @sandra_bennett59.

The guy before me at a clinic in Wichita used 400 zip ties on a single 42U rack. 400. I counted. Took me a whole Saturday with wire cutters and a lot of bad language to get them all out. Velcro straps are just common sense for anyone who has to touch a cable more than once. You pay a little more upfront but you save your sanity later. Plus zip ties leave those sharp little nubs that always draw blood when you're fishing a new line.

The "sharp little nubs that always draw blood" line hit me right in the PTSD. I swear those things are designed by someone who hates technicians. 400 zip ties on one rack isn't cable management, it's a cry for help. Hope that guys' next job is somewhere with only paperclips and rubber bands.
