That 9AM server crash call that flipped my opinion on tape backups
I used to think tape backups were dead tech, like fax machines or CRT monitors. Last Tuesday changed that. Client in Phoenix calls at 9AM, their NAS is toast after a power surge cooked two drives in a RAID 5 array. I show up, and their only cloud backup is 4 days stale because their upload pipe is trash. But they had this old LTO-6 drive in the closet that their previous IT guy set up. I pop in a tape from Sunday night, and in 45 minutes their critical files are back on a temp SSD. That single tape saved their whole business week. Now I'm recommending tape to any small shop with slow internet. Has anyone else had a legacy tech moment like this where the old gear saved the day?

And that's why I always keep one old tape drive around too, it's like an insurance policy nobody thinks about until they need it.
