That one Thursday where three dead drives showed up in a single service call

Last month I had a client in Akron with three desktops that all died on the same day, each with a clicking hard drive. Turns out they had a power surge hit their strip, but the strip was still plugged in and the drives were all from the same bad batch back in 2019. I spent 6 hours cloning what I could with my old dock, and only recovered about 40% of the files. Anyone else ever get a wave of failures like that, or was it just my cursed luck?

Man, that's brutal but not surprising. When a surge hits a strip that's still powered on, it can fry the controller boards even if the platters survive, and those 2019 drives were already ticking time bombs. I've seen whole office racks go down in waves like that, usually right after a storm rolls through the neighborhood and the power flickers a few times.
