Warning: the overnight shift at the data center broke my whole view of thermal paste

I used to slap paste on thin, like a single pea in the center, and call it good. Then I picked up a 3rd shift contract at a colo facility in Charlotte last spring and saw their lead tech spreading it with a spatula across the whole lid. He said 'you're just filling the gaps, not painting a masterpiece' and after six months of monitoring temps on their rack, the difference is like 8 to 10 degrees Celsius under load. Has anyone else had that moment where you realized your basic method was wrong the whole time, but it took someone else's setup to see it?

Swapped to full coverage after seeing a buddy's rig run cooler, never looked back.

My 4Runner dropped 15 degrees after I went full coverage too, no regrets.
