A civil engineer changed how I look at control joints

Last Thursday I was pouring a slab for a detached garage in Tacoma and the engineer stopped by to check the rebar. He asked why I was cutting joints every 8 feet and I told him that's just how I've always done it. He pulled out his phone and showed me pics of cracked slabs that followed the exact lines I was putting in. Said the saw depth matters more than spacing if the subgrade isn't compacted right, and I had never really thought about it that hard. Has anyone else had a designer or engineer point out something basic that made you feel like you'd been doing it blind for years?
