A plumber on a job site last week said he always asks for a broom finish on his basement floors.

He told me it's not for looks, but because the slight texture gives better grip when the floor gets wet from a leak or a sump pump issue. I'd never thought about the finish from a safety angle like that before. Do any of you get requests for specific finishes based on how the space will be used, not just how it looks?

Makes me wonder about other overlooked safety details in finishes.

Honestly, that's a scary thought and you're right to bring it up. Tbh I bet there are a ton of things we just accept as safe because they're common. Like, how many products have finishes that off-gas stuff we never hear about? It feels like unless there's a huge lawsuit or a recall, nobody talks about it. Makes you want to research everything that comes into your house now.

Yeah, I read something about that old linoleum in schools (the really old stuff) can have asbestos in the backing. It's fine if it's sealed up, but sanding it for a refinish is a huge problem nobody talks about. Just gets filed under "out of sight, out of mind" until someone disturbs it.

Wait, a broom finish is actually a safety thing? That's wild. Never would have crossed my mind.

Check the safety data sheets, like @spencer_owens58 said, they list everything.
