Am I the only one who was told to never pour in the wind and it cost me a whole slab?
My old foreman Dale said flat out that pouring in any breeze over 10 mph would ruin the finish, so I waited two days to pour a 20 by 30 patio in Amarillo. Two days later the wind died but the temp hit 98 and the mix started setting up before I got the screed across it, leaving a rough edge on the west side that I ended up grinding for four hours. A different crew poured the same day Dale told me to hold off, and their slab came out smooth because they just used a set retarder and kept the surface wet. So now I'm wondering if Dale's rule was too simple for real jobs, or if I just got unlucky. How do you all decide when wind is a deal breaker versus when you just need to prep the mix differently?
Dale's rule is way too simple for real slabs, wind speed alone doesn't decide anything. Retarder and keeping it wet is how you handle it, not hiding for two days.
