Hit my first 1,000 square foot pour solo last month and it felt like a big deal

I been finishing concrete for about 4 years now, mostly on smaller jobs like patios and walkways. Last month I got a chance to do a big warehouse floor near Austin, all by myself, 1,000 square feet. The mix was a standard 4-inch slab with fiber mesh, nothing too fancy, but the timing was tight because the sun was beating down. I had to keep the edges from crusting while I worked the bull float and then hit it with the Fresno. By the time I got the hand trowel on it my arms were shaking. I surprised myself that I actually pulled it off without any big cracks or bird baths. Has anyone else hit a milestone like that that made you feel like you finally belonged in this trade?

I used to think those big solo pours were just about muscle and grit, but after watching a guy I know try a 2,000 square foot garage floor and end up with a mess of cold joints and a finish that looked like a bad road, I realized it's more about planning and knowing your limits. Your 1,000 footer solo, especially with the sun pushing you like that, is no joke. The arm shake after the Fresno is real, I've been there on a much smaller patio and thought I was done for. That feeling of finishing without cracks or bird baths is something that sticks with you and makes you trust your own timing a lot more. Did you have to change your approach halfway through because of the heat, or did your plan hold up from the start?

Did you ever figure out what slowed you down more, the heat or just the sheer size of the pour? In my experience, that sun changes everything real quick. I've had a few jobs where I thought I had enough time and then halfway through I'm fighting the set and wishing I'd ordered a load with some retarder. It sounds like you kept it together pretty well though, which is more than a lot of guys can say. That feeling of getting it done clean with no cold joints or bird baths, man, that's the kind of thing that keeps you coming back. I'd say you earned a cold one and a good stretch after that one.
