Tried using a broom handle to level my concrete slab and it actually worked
I was pouring a small patio for my aunt in Phoenix last weekend and forgot my screed board at home. I grabbed a broom handle from her garage and used it to level the surface, and the slab came out flatter than any of my regular tools ever have. Has anyone else tried something random like this and got lucky?

Borrowed a level from my uncle's fishing tackle box once and it beat every tool I own.

Old tools can be built better sometimes... but I gotta disagree here. A level is one of those things that either works or it doesn't, the brand or age doesn't change whether the bubble sits in the middle. A beat up old level might still be accurate, sure, but it isn't magically better than modern ones just because it's old. The real test is calibration, not heritage. If that old level is true, it's the same as a cheap new one that's also true.

Honestly, it's like that whole attitude that somehow something older and beaten up just has to be better, like people forget that a brand new tool out of the box can be just as flawed if you never check it. The real skill is just knowing how to verify it works, regardless of the story behind it.
