I finally tested the "50 year" shingle claim on my own shed in Tulsa, and the results were not what the salesman promised
A roofer in Tulsa told me his architectural shingles would outlast me, so I put a test patch on my shed in 2019 and checked it this spring. After 5 winters the granules were already coming off in the gutter, and a flap of felt was showing on the south side. The same guy swore the 30 year shingles were a scam, which now makes me wonder if the whole warranty system is just a numbers game nobody actually enforces. Has anyone else kept a sample board long enough to see a shingle fail early?
Your shed test isn't really the same as a roof though. Sheds sit out there with no attic space under them, so the shingles bake and freeze way harder than they would on a house with some air flow. Five years of Oklahoma hail and 100 degree summers will chew up anything, even the good stuff.
