My dentist's throwaway line about fillings made me dig into dental amalgam history

I was getting a cavity filled last Tuesday in Akron and my dentist said, "You know, some people still think these release mercury vapors when you chew." I laughed it off, but then I spent 3 hours reading old FDA transcripts and 1980s studies online. The fact that the ADA held a closed-door meeting in 1986 about mercury levels and never published the minutes feels off to me now. Anyone else here looked into the silver filling controversy and landed somewhere unexpected?
