That old router setup I swore would take 20 minutes ended up taking 6 hours

I was helping my uncle swap out his ancient wifi router last Sunday. He had this whole network of wires labeled from like 2009 that didn't match anything anymore. Turns out three devices were still running on that old 192.168.1.x subnet and I had to factory reset everything one by one. Has anyone else cracked open a panel and just stared at a mess of cables for 10 minutes before starting?

read a thread on r/homenetworking last week where a guy found his old ISP had hardcoded the subnet mask into the modem firmware. 6 hours is rough but at least you didn't have to call them.

Oh wow, yeah I used to think there was no way ISPs would pull stuff like that. This totally changed my mind though, that's just shady. Six hours is still way too long for something that dumb.

my buddy in minneapolis spent 4 hours on hold with cox @robin591 for a similar subnet issue.
