The $200 deep freezer I bought to store bulk food ended up costing me more in electricity
I bought a cheap chest freezer from a big box store last year thinking I'd save by buying meat in bulk. It was $200 on sale and seemed like a great deal. My electric bill went up by about $25 a month after I plugged it in. After 8 months that's $200 extra just to run it. A friend told me the older models are way less efficient than the new ones with energy star ratings. I should have spent the extra $150 on a better unit. Anyone else get burned by a low upfront cost on appliances?

Honestly that sucks, I did basically the same thing with a cheap window AC unit last summer. The power bill jump made the "deal" totally pointless after a couple months.

and it's not just freezers and AC units either, the same thing happens with pretty much everything nowadays. I feel like people are trained to just look at the price tag and not think about what it actually costs to run something month after month. Like those cheap electric space heaters or old fridges people pick up second hand, they can end up costing way more than a new efficient one within a year or two. It's a trap we all fall into because the upfront number is right there in your face but the hidden cost sneaks up on you over time.

Yeah that sucks man. I did the same thing with a cheap fridge for the garage. Paid $180 for it and the power bill jumped about $30 a month. After a year I did the math and it was way cheaper to just go buy a nicer one with the energy star rating. It's tough because the low price tag is so tempting upfront but the electric company gets you in the end. Lesson learned for both of us I guess.
