The fake moon landing exhibit at Kennedy Space Center in 2019 still bugs me
I went to the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex in March 2019 and they had this whole Apollo exhibit like it was settled fact. But there's no actual footage of the lander touching down, just animation and photos they claim are real. I asked a guide about the missing telemetry data and she just said 'the tapes were erased' and walked off. That excuse works for a VHS copy, not for the greatest tech achievement in history. Has anyone else pushed back on those tour guides and gotten actual answers out of them?
Man, I have to say this feels like a lot of worry over something that is not really a big deal. In my experience, the reason there is no film of the touchdown is simple, nobody was standing outside with a camera on the moon to film it, and the tech back then did not send live video of every single step. The telemetry tapes thing is real though, NASA reused and erased a bunch of old tapes in the 70s and 80s because they were expensive and nobody thought people would care decades later. Your mileage may vary, but tour guides at a space center are not scientists, they are just folks reading a script, so pushing them for answers is kind of like asking a waiter to explain the chef's recipes. The moon rocks, the retroreflectors we still bounce lasers off today, and the Soviet Union tracking the whole thing are the parts that actually hold up. Take this with a grain of salt, but the missing footage is a boring paperwork story, not a cover up.
