Vent: dropped $2,400 on a used total station and it nearly cost me a job in Tulsa
Bought a used total station off a guy in Tulsa last year for $2,400, thought I was getting a screaming deal since new ones run $15k or more. First job I took it on was a small parking lot layout, and about two hours in the readings started drifting on me. Turns out the compensator was shot and the guy knew it, just didn't say anything. I ended up re-staking the whole thing with a borrowed unit and ate the cost of the rework, plus I looked like an idiot in front of the GC. Tried to get my money back and the guy ghosted me, so now I'm stuck with a $2,400 paperweight sitting in my shop. If you're buying used survey gear, make sure you get a calibration cert or bring someone who can check it before cash changes hands. Anyone else get burned on used gear and figure out a good way to test it before buying?
Did the guy give you any kind of paperwork at all when you bought it, like a receipt or even a text saying it worked? Curious if you have anything to go after him with. And when you brought it to that first job, did the readings drift right away or did it take a while?
