Overheard a guy say you need 10k subscribers before you should even think about merch

I was at a coffee shop near downtown Austin last Thursday and heard two creators arguing about merch timing. The one guy was dead set that nobody buys merch under 10k subs, but the other said he sold 50 shirts at 2k subs because his audience was super niche. What's your take on when to start selling merch, or does it totally depend on the type of content you make?

10k subs and you're already late, start at 500 with a shirt nobody else has.

Start at 500 with a shirt nobody else has" is honestly solid advice that I wish I'd heard earlier. It's rough when you finally get some traction and suddenly you're just one more face in the crowd with the same merch everyone else is pushing. Hang in there, smaller communities are way more loyal anyway.

@hugoj12 my buddy sold 30 hats at 500 subs in a niche gaming group.
