Saw a newer creator hit 10k subs in 4 months and it threw me

Last month I noticed this young guy starting out on YouTube with maybe 200 subscribers. He was posting daily shorts about his woodworking mistakes and showing every fail. I checked his channel yesterday and he is at 12k subscribers already. It took me 3 years to hit that number when I started back in 2020. I wonder if the algorithm just favors that raw beginner style now or if I am overthinking my content too much. Has anyone else seen new accounts blow up way faster than yours did?

I watched a similar thing happen with a gardening channel last year where a guy just filmed himself failing at planting tomatoes and had 50k in six months. But here's my grain of salt moment - I've seen those fast growers hit a wall hard around 20k when they realize making fluff content every day burns you out and doesn't build a real community. Your 3 years to 10k probably gave you way more loyal viewers who actually stick around for the long haul, not just algorithm chasers. The algorithm loves raw beginner energy because it's low pressure to watch, but your mileage may vary on whether that translates to real engagement or just a flash in the pan.

My cousin tried the same thing with a cooking channel where she just showed herself burning toast, got to 15k fast, then quit because people kept asking her to burn other things and she couldn't keep up the bit. It's funny how the internet rewards the most random stuff but never sticks around to support it long term. Slow growth channels like yours probably have people who actually care about the content, not just watching someone fail for a laugh.
