That $5 thumbnail template pack I laughed at actually works
I spent two years making custom thumbnails from scratch for my gaming channel. Took me like 45 minutes per video. Last month I bought a $5 template pack on a whim because I was tired. Used one of the templates and my click rate jumped from 3% to 7% in a week. Has anyone else found a cheap shortcut that actually outperformed your custom work?

OMG YES! I had the EXACT same thing happen with my cooking channel. I spent weeks making these "artistic" thumbnails with my own photos and weird filters, click rate was stuck around 2%. Then I bought a $3 pack of "fast food style" templates just to see what the hype was about. Threw one on a recipe video and my click rate doubled to 6% in like three days. The templates have this stupid clean layout with bright colors and a big food image that just WORKS better than anything I made. Now I just swap my photo into the template box and it takes me 5 minutes tops.

The first time I tried a template for my tech reviews, I felt like I was cheating. @jakejones, I get where you're coming from on the art thing, but for me it's about results over feelings. My video on cheap wireless earbuds was getting about 1.5% click rate with my custom thumbnail that had this moody blue filter. Swapped in a bright yellow template with the product front and center and it jumped to 4.8% in a week. I hate how well they work because they look like every other channel, but my watch time actually went up too since people knew what they were clicking. I still make my own thumbnails for personal projects, but for YouTube I just use the template now because the data is clear on what works.
