That comment about my lighting setup that changed everything

Back in 2019 I was posting makeup tutorials on YouTube and getting okay views but something felt off. A random viewer commented that my face looked flat and they couldn't see the blending properly. I spent like 3 weeks reading about three point lighting and finally bought a couple of cheap softbox lights from Amazon for $60 total. That single change made my videos look way more professional and my subs started growing after that. It's funny how one little nudge from a stranger can fix a blind spot you didn't even know you had. Anyone else get a critique that totally shifted your content game?

Spent $40 on a ring light after someone said my shadows were too harsh. Big difference.

Some of the best results I've seen came from people who stopped worrying about perfect lighting and focused on the content itself instead. The slight shadows add depth and make the image feel real, not like something out of a catalog. $40 could have bought a lot of other things that actually improve the final product, like a better backdrop or some simple props. The harsh shadows might have even been something viewers found interesting or distinctive about your style. Just some food for thought before everyone rushes out to spend more money on equipment.

Piper_kim you might be onto something but the whole point of that original post is the ring light was a cheap fix that actually worked well for them. The thing about harsh shadows is sometimes they look good on purpose but other times they just make everything look amateur and flat. Ive seen people try to lean into that look and it works for some styles but not for food photography or product shots where you need to see the details clearly. Props and backdrops are great but they dont fix bad lighting, they just sit in the same bad lighting looking worse. $40 is practically nothing for something that can be used for years across all kinds of projects, its not like they bought a whole studio setup.
