A talk with my grandpa about his old truck changed how I see my own work

For years, I thought my tree service was just about cutting and clearing. I saw it as a job to get done. Then, about two months ago, I was helping my grandpa fix up his 1972 Ford pickup. He was telling a story about how he used it for his own small business, and he said something simple: 'You're not just moving wood, you're helping people's homes.' He meant that every tree we trim or remove is part of someone's yard, their memories, their view. That one line flipped a switch for me. Now, when I give an estimate, I take more time to listen to what the homeowner really wants for their space. I look at the whole picture, not just the tree. It changed my whole reason for going to work each morning. Has a simple comment from a family member ever shifted how you view your own job?

Funny how the most basic observations can reframe a whole job. It's like people forget the human part of the work until someone points it out.

Totally, it's wild how we build up all these complex systems and forget the simple stuff. Like in customer service, you can have all the scripts and rules, but just listening to someone's actual problem fixes things faster. Or in teaching, a kid might act out, but the real issue is they're hungry or tired. We get so caught up in the process we miss the person right in front of us.

Honestly, saw this at my last job all the time. We had all these new tools but never just asked people what they needed. Tbh it drove me nuts.
