Everyone says to network for job leads, but I found my best opportunity by helping a stranger fix their dryer in Phoenix last July.

I spent months sending resumes and talking to people at meetups, but this one guy I helped with a belt replacement tipped me off to a role that wasn't even posted yet, and I got hired within two weeks, has anyone else landed work through a random act of kindness?

You ever have a buddy who just has the weirdest luck? My friend Ellen was at a laundromat in August, and this old lady's machine ate her quarters. Ellen loaned her a few bucks, no big deal. Turns out the lady's son managed a supply warehouse, and he hired Ellen the next week because she seemed trustworthy. She didn't even know they were hiring. So yeah, it's a thing.

@piper_kim Would argue that's less about luck and more about Ellen being a decent person who does small favors. Most people who loan quarters to strangers don't get jobs out of it. The weird part is the timing, sure, but it's just cause and effect with a lucky break thrown in.

So basically Ellen got a job because she gave someone $3 in quarters. Maybe I should start hanging out at laundromats instead of LinkedIn.
