Honestly, that 5-minute call with a retired electrician fixed my whole wiring fear
I refused to touch anything past the breaker box for years, but this old guy I met at the coffee shop in Dayton said 'just treat every wire like it's live and buy a $10 non-contact voltage tester'. Has anyone else had a random stranger's advice totally override years of anxiety about something?

Oh man, that reminds me of my friend Dave. He was terrified of changing a ceiling fan for like two years because of the wiring. Then his neighbor, some retiree named Earl, came over with a multimeter and showed him how to test each wire and explained which ones were the neutral and hot. Dave said Earl just shrugged and said "electricity ain't magic, it's just math you can see". He finally changed that fan last weekend and sent me a picture of it working, said he felt like a moron for being scared so long.

Hah, that's great. My buddy Steve had a similar thing with his water heater pilot light. Wouldn't touch it for months. Just kept resetting the breaker when it went out. His dad finally drove three hours to show him it's just a button you hold and a knob you turn. Took like two minutes. Steve said he felt like a total dumbass after. Sometimes you just need someone to show you it's not rocket science, you know?

I had to call my brother-in-law for something similar with our garage door opener. It just stopped working one day and I spent hours looking up circuit boards and replacement motors online. He came over, looked at it for maybe 30 seconds, and pointed out the safety sensor was just slightly misaligned from me hitting it with the trash can. One little twist to point them at each other and it worked perfect. Sometimes you just get stuck in your head about a problem and can't see the simple fix right in front of you.
