I finally picked between staying with my family or moving for a guy I was dating

Dated a guy in Austin for 8 months last year and he wanted me to move there, but my mom was going through chemo and my dog grooming shop was finally making decent money. I stayed here in Denver and we broke up 3 weeks later. Has anyone else had to make a choice between people you love and a partner, and how did you know you picked right?

Oh man, "chose family over a guy and broke up 3 weeks later" is basically my life story too. I picked staying near my dad when he was sick instead of following a dude to Portland, and within a month he'd already moved on. Still don't regret it for a second - family and a solid business are way more real than some guy who can't handle a little distance.

Five years I spent in a long distance thing with this girl from Chicago. She picked her brother's wedding planning over coming to see me for my 30th. Three weeks later I met someone at a bar who actually showed up. That wedding planner girl hit me up six months later crying about how her brother's marriage fell apart. Not my problem anymore. People make choices and those choices have consequences.

Hold up, I gotta push back on this a little. Sometimes picking family isn't about who you love more, it's about circumstances you can't just walk away from. @jana_shah proved that point. Her dad was sick, man. That's different than skipping a birthday for wedding planning drama. But even then, five years deserves a real conversation, not a text six months later crying about her brother's marriage. You don't get to ghost someone for months then show up with regrets after your backup plan blows up. She shoulda been upfront from the start instead of waiting until she had nowhere else to turn.
