I tried asking my dad why he never talked about his time in the army. His answer about a guy named Charlie from his unit made me cry.

Did he ever tell you more about Charlie, or was that it?

No, that was pretty much it. You know how it is, patricia_gonzalez. People drop these little bits about their past, but the full story stays locked up. I see it all the time, not just with him. It's like everyone's carrying around these old, half-told stories they think are too boring or too heavy to explain. Makes you wonder what we're all walking around with.

Sometimes I think we read too much into stuff, you know? Maybe the peaches were just peaches and the guy's story was really that simple.

My uncle's whole Vietnam story is just him and a guy named Dave who shared a single can of peaches. That's the veteran version of a full biography right there. They really do hand out these tiny puzzle pieces and expect us to understand the whole picture.
