My buddy asked why I always said yes to extra shifts, and I didn't have an answer
We were sitting in his truck outside the shop in Boise last month and he asked me straight up why I never turn down overtime, even when I'm dead tired. I started listing reasons and halfway through I heard myself and realized I wasn't saying anything about money or my family, I was just scared of looking lazy. He didn't lecture me, he just said 'so you're working for the version of you that isn't in the room.' I dropped two shifts that week and felt weirdly guilty about it. How do you tell the difference between being a hard worker and just being scared to say no?
Is it bad that I know exactly what you mean? My old boss used to call me at 5am to cover and I'd say yes before I was even awake enough to think. Took me years to see I wasn't doing it for the paycheck, I was doing it so nobody could say I wasn't pulling my weight. The wild part is nobody was even keeping score except me. When I finally said no to one, I sat in my car feeling like I'd robbed a bank or something. That guilt is the tell, honestly. Real hard work doesn't come with that pit in your stomach.
