My neighbor Frank told me a story that changed how I think about money

I was helping him fix his porch last Saturday and he mentioned he paid off his house in 12 years by always asking "does this bring me closer to freedom?" before any purchase. He said it made him realize most of his spending was just keeping up appearances. What's one question someone asked you that totally shifted your daily choices?

yeah man that freedom question is cute and all but what about the part where you gotta actually have money left over to not spend? like cool Frank paid off his house in 12 years but was he eating rice and beans every night and wearing the same pair of jeans since 2012? I mean the real magic trick would be asking "does this bring me closer to being able to afford my rent next month" if you're barely scraping by. its easy to say no to a new TV when you're already sitting on a stack of cash. so yeah the question works great if your wallet already has room to breathe.

Frank's story is good but 12 years to pay off a house is pretty normal with a 15 year mortgage. Most people don't have that extra income to throw at it so the real trick is making more money or buying way less house. That freedom question only works if you actually have room in your budget to say no to things.

Quinna89 is right though, Frank probably wasn't eating steak every night either.
