My old boss in Dayton offered me a foreman spot at 24 and I turned it down to keep pulling wire
He pulled me into the trailer after a rough day on a hospital job and said the job was mine if I wanted it, more money and my own crew, but I'd be in meetings half the day instead of on the floor. I said no and stayed in the field for another 6 years, and honestly watching the guy who took it deal with the politics made me sure I picked right for me. Has anyone else turned down a promotion that everyone told them to take, and how did it shake out?
Man, I gotta push back on this one. Turning down that foreman gig at 24 might have felt right in the moment, but six more years of pulling wire is six more years of wearing out your knees and back while somebody else signs your checks. The politics are real, sure, but you learn to deal with them, and the money and the doors it opens stack up fast. Staying in the field feels safe because you know the work, but safe and smart are not the same thing. You watched the other guy struggle and told yourself you dodged a bullet, but he was building something while you were still on the ladder. I get that the floor is where you're happiest, but happy today does not pay for your body breaking down at 50.
