My uncle's three word question about my route changed how I handle every detour

Last summer I was complaining to my uncle Ralph about a closed road that added 40 minutes to my delivery run. He just asked, 'Why you mad?' At first I thought it was a dumb question, obviously I was mad because I was late. But he pointed out that I couldn't fix the road, I could only fix my attitude or my route. I realized I spend so much energy fuming about things outside my control, and that energy does nothing for me. Now when I hit a detour or a delay, I ask myself the same question before I react. It sounds simple, but hearing it from him in his garage while he worked on an old tractor made it stick. Has anyone else had a tiny phrase from a family member that just lived in your head forever?

Did he also fix your attitude with a wrench?
